This book is a study of how the poetry of Chaucer continued to give pleasure in the eighteenth century despite the immense linguistic, literary, and cultural shifts that had occurred between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. It investigates the full variety of responses to Chaucer from the late seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century. These include editions, biographies, and critical accounts and various kinds of translation, adaptation, and imitation. The book is primarily designed to appeal to students of eighteenth-century literature and of Chaucer, but should also be of interest to students of literary influence and reception in all periods.
