The demand for freshwater is increasing globally, leading to a shortage of water sources due to increasing water pollution and industrial use. Wet beneficiation techniques, widely used in the separation of solid mixtures, require a significant amount of fresh water and can be expensive. Dry triboelectrostatic separation, using the triboelectric effect to charge particles and separate them based on their electrical properties, has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional methods. The wet beneficiation techniques with their limitations and improvements to make them dry were discussed. Triboelectrostatic separators offer several advantages, including lower cost, higher separation efficiency, lower energy consumption, and the ability to handle a wide range of particle sizes. Different methods of tribocharging and different configurations of electrostatic separators have been discussed. The triboelectrostatic belt separation technology was first applied industrially to the processing of coal combustion fly ash in 1995 and has since been used in other industrial applications like plastic recycling, obtaining NMF from e-waste, recovering metals from ore, and many more in the regions of the USA, Canada, the UK, and Asia. This paper reviews the potential of dry triboelectrostatic separation to revolutionize beneficiation methods while mitigating environmental and economic concerns associated with wet beneficiation methods. Dry beneficiation will also help to meet the sustainability goals in the areas of sustainable mining and reduction in water utilization.
